The species Rhodopseudomonas viridis was originally described by Drews and Giesbrecht 1966. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1997, Hiraishi established as the basonym of (Drews and Giesbrecht 1966) Hiraishi 1997 emend. Hördt et al. 2020 .
