Nomenclatural History	The species Methanococcus jannaschii was originally described by Jones et al. 1983. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 16 in 1984. In 2001, Whitman established Methanococcus jannaschii as the basonym of Methanocaldococcus jannaschii (Jones et al. 1984) Whitman 2002 .
