The species Methanococcus mazei was originally described by Barker 1936. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 62 in 1986. In 1984, Mah and Kuhn established as the basonym of (Barker 1936) Mah and Kuhn 1984 .
