The species Methanothermococcus thermolithotrophicus was originally described by Whitman 2001. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 85 in 2002. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 81 in 2008. Whitman formed this name in 2001 by placing the species Huber et al. 1984 into the genus Whitman 2002.
