The genus Cupriavidus was originally proposed and validly published by Makkar and Casida 1987. Vandamme and Coenye published an emended description of this genus in 2004. Vandamme and Coenye established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Vaneechoutte et al. 2004 in 2004.
