The species Polynucleobacter necessarius was originally described and validly published by Heckmann and Schmidt 1987. Hahn et al. published an emended description of this species in 2009. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Hahn et al. in 2016. In 2009, Hahn et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
