The species Methanomicrobium paynteri was originally described by Rivard et al. 1983. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 13 in 1984. In 1989, Zellner et al. established as the basonym of (Rivard et al. 1984) Zellner et al. 1990 .
