The species Methanomicrobium paynteri was originally described by Rivard et al. 1983. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 13 in 1984. In 1989, Zellner et al. established Methanomicrobium paynteri as the basonym of
Methanolacinia paynteri (Rivard et al. 1984) Zellner et al. 1990
.
