The species Sphaerotilus natans was originally described by Kützing 1833. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Gridneva et al. published an emended description of this species in 2011. In 2011, Gridneva et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Kützing 1833) Gridneva et al. 2011 .
