Nomenclatural History
The species Methanoculleus thermophilus was originally described and validly published by Maestrojuán et al. 1990. Spring et al. corrected this name from (sic) to . Spring et al. published an emended description of this species in 2005. Maestrojuán et al. formed this name in 1990 by placing the species Rivard and Smith 1982 emend. Zabel et al. 1985 into the genus Maestrojuán et al. 1990. Spring et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Harris et al. 1996 in 2005.
