The species Thiobacillus thiooxidans was originally described by Waksman and Joffe 1922. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Kelly and Wood established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Thiobacillus concretivorus Parker 1945 (Approved Lists 1980)
in 2000. In 2000, Kelly and Wood established Thiobacillus thiooxidans as the basonym of
Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (Waksman and Joffe 1922) Kelly and Wood 2000
.
