The species Aquaspirillum dispar was originally described by Hylemon et al. 1973. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Cleenwerck et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of
Microvirgula aerodenitrificans Patureau et al. 1998 emend. Cleenwerck et al. 2003
in 2003.
