The species Methanogenium marisnigri was originally described by Romesser et al. 1979. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 6 in 1981. In 1990, Maestrojuán et al. established as the basonym of (Romesser et al. 1981) Maestrojuán et al. 1990 .
