Nomenclatural History

The genus Nitrosospira was originally proposed by Winogradsky and Winogradsky 1933. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Watson published an emended description of this genus in 1974. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Head et al. in 1993. Head et al. transferred the members of
Nitrosolobus Watson et al. 1971 emend. Watson 1974 (Approved Lists 1980)
into this genus in 1993.
