This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 54 in 1995. The species Nitrosospira tenuis was originally described by Harms et al. 1976. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1993 the name was revived by Head et al..
