The species Methanolacinia paynteri was originally described by Zellner et al. 1989. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 35 in 1990. Zellner et al. formed this name in 1989 by placing the species Rivard et al. 1984 into the genus Zellner et al. 1990 emend. Göker et al. 2014.
