Nomenclatural History
The genus Amoebobacter was originally proposed by Winogradsky 1888. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Pfennig and Trüper published an emended description of this genus in 1974. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Guyoneaud et al. in 1998. Guyoneaud et al. transferred the members of this genus into Winogradsky 1888 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Guyoneaud et al. 1998 in 1998.

The 1998 emendation by Guyoneaud et al. proposed Amoebobacter purpureus as the new type species for this genus. This is illegitimate and was not put into effect.
