The species Amoebobacter purpureus was originally described by Eichler and Pfennig 1988. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 29 in 1989. In 1999, Tindall established Amoebobacter purpureus as the basonym of
Pfennigia purpurea (Eichler and Pfennig 1989) Tindall 1999
