Nomenclatural History
The genus Nitrosococcus was originally proposed by Winogradsky 1892. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum conservanda by Judicial Opinion 23 in 1958. Watson published an emended description of this genus in 1974. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Campbell et al. in 2011 and Wang et al. in 2016.
