This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 56 in 1996. The genus Rhabdochromatium was originally proposed by Winogradsky 1888. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1995 the name was revived by Dilling et al..
