The species Ectothiorhodospira mobilis was originally described by Pelsh 1936. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Ventura et al. published an emended description of this species in 2000. Ventura et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Oren et al. 1990 in 2000.
