The species Ectothiorhodospira abdelmalekii was originally described by Imhoff and Trüper 1981. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 8 in 1982. In 1996, Imhoff and Süling established as the basonym of (Imhoff and Trüper 1982) Imhoff and Süling 1997 .
