The species Ectothiorhodospira shaposhnikovii was originally described by Cherni et al. 1969. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Ventura et al. published an emended description of this species in 2000. Ventura et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of Imhoff et al. 1982 in 2000.
