The species Halothiobacillus hydrothermalis was originally described and validly published by Kelly and Wood 2000. Kelly and Wood formed this name in 2000 by placing the species Durand et al. 1997 into the genus Kelly and Wood 2000 emend. Boden 2017. In 2017, Boden established as the basonym of (Durand et al. 1997) Boden 2017 .
