The species Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans was originally described and validly published by Kelly and Wood 2000. Kelly and Wood formed this name in 2000 by placing the species Waksman and Joffe 1922 (Approved Lists 1980) into the genus Kelly and Wood 2000 emend. Hallberg et al. 2010.
