Nomenclatural History

The genus Xanthomonas was originally proposed by Dowson 1939. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Dye and Lelliott published an emended description of this genus in 1974. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Vauterin et al. in 1995. This name replaces the name
Phytomonas Bergey et al. 1923
