Nomenclatural History
The genus Methanosarcina was originally proposed by Kluyver and van Niel 1936. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum conservanda by Judicial Opinion 63 in 1986. Barker published an emended description of this genus in 1956. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Bryant in 1974, in 1979 and Ni et al. in 1994.
