This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 31 in 1989. Upon validation, this name was corrected from (sic) to . The species Thiobacterium bovistum was originally described by Molisch 1912. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1989 the name was revived by La Rivière and Kuenen.
