The species Francisella novicida was originally described by Olsufiev et al. 1959. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2005, Sjöstedt reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form
Francisella tularensis novicida (Olsufiev et al. 1959) Hollis et al. 2010 emend. Sjöstedt 2005
