Nomenclatural History
The species Methanosarcina mazei was originally described and validly published by Mah and Kuhn 1984. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 62 in 1986. Mah and Kuhn formed this name in 1984 by placing the species Barker 1936 (Approved Lists 1980) into the genus Kluyver and van Niel 1936 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Ni et al. 1994. Maestrojuán et al. established this name as an earlier heterotypic synonym of (Blotevogel et al. 1986) Blotevogel and Fischer 1989 in 1992.
