The species Legionella bozemanae was originally described by Brenner et al. 1980. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 5 in 1980. Krieg and Holt corrected this name from (sic) to . Garrity et al. established as a later homotypic synonym of Garrity et al. 1980 in 1980.

This species is an illegitimate later homotypic synonym of Fluoribacter bozemanae Garrity et al. 1980.
