The species Methylobacter pelagicus was originally described and validly published by Bowman et al. 1993. Bowman et al. formed this name in 1993 by placing the species Sieburth et al. 1988 into the genus Bowman et al. 1993 emend. Bowman et al. 1995. In 1995, Bowman et al. established as the basonym of (Sieburth et al. 1988) Bowman et al. 1995 .
