Nomenclatural History

This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 15 in 1984. The species Methylomonas methanica was originally described by Söhngen 1906. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1984 the name was revived by Whittenbury and Krieg.
