The species Methylomonas pelagica was originally described by Sieburth et al. 1987. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 24 in 1988. In 1993, Bowman et al. established as the basonym of (Sieburth et al. 1988) Bowman et al. 1993 .
