The species Methylomonas pelagica was originally described by Sieburth et al. 1987. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 24 in 1988. In 1993, Bowman et al. established Methylomonas pelagica as the basonym of
Methylobacter pelagicus (Sieburth et al. 1988) Bowman et al. 1993
.
