Nomenclatural History
The subspecies Oceanospirillum beijerinckii pelagicum was originally described and validly published by Pot et al. 1989. In 1989, Pot et al. reduced (Terasaki 1973) Terasaki 1979 (Approved Lists 1980) to the rank of subspecies.

Satomi et al. (2002) assert that this subspecies should be rejected, which would effectively undo the changes made by Pot et al. (1989). However, no formal request for opinion was made and the subspecies continue to have standing in nomenclature.
