The species Oceanospirillum pelagicum was originally described by Terasaki 1979. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1989, Pot et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Terasaki 1973) Pot et al. 1989 .
