The species Oceanospirillum pusillum was originally described by Terasaki 1979. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 2002, Satomi et al. established as the basonym of (Terasaki 1973) Satomi et al. 2002 emend. Hördt et al. 2020 .
