The genus Neptunomonas was originally proposed by Hedlund et al. 1999. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 71 in 1999. Lee et al. published an emended description of this genus in 2012. A subsequent emendation was proposed by Yang et al. in 2014.
