The species Pseudomonas mephitica was originally described by Claydon and Hammer 1939. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Kämpfer et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of
Janthinobacterium lividum (Eisenberg 1891) De Ley et al. 1978 (Approved Lists 1980)
in 2008.
