The species Azotobacter chroococcum was originally described by Beijerinck 1901. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Jin et al. published an emended description of this species in 2020. In 2020, Jin et al. reduced this species to the rank of subspecies to form (Beijerinck 1901) Jin et al. 2020 .
