Nomenclatural History
The genus Halobacterium was originally proposed by Elazari-Volcani 1957. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 79 in 2005. Gibbons published an emended description of this genus in 1974. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Kamekura and Dyall-Smith in 1995 and Oren et al. in 2009.
