The species Halobacterium cutirubrum was originally described by Elazari-Volcani 1957. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Ventosa and Oren established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of
Halobacterium salinarum corrig. (Harrison and Kennedy 1922) Elazari-Volcani 1957 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Gruber et al. 2004
in 1996.
