The genus Serpens was originally proposed by Hespell 1977. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Shin et al. transferred the members of this genus into
Pseudomonas Migula 1894 (Approved Lists 1980) emend. Yang et al. 2013
in 2015.
