The species Moraxella lacunata was originally described by Lwoff 1939. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 41 in 1971. In 1979, Bøvre established as the basonym of (Eyre 1900) Bøvre 1979 .
