The species Halobacterium pharaonis was originally described by Soliman and Trüper 1982. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 10 in 1983. In 1984, Tindall et al. established Halobacterium pharaonis as the basonym of
Natronobacterium pharaonis (Soliman and Trüper 1983) Tindall et al. 1984
