The species Alteromonas communis was originally described by Baumann et al. 1972. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. In 1983, van Landschoot and De Ley established Alteromonas communis as the basonym of
Marinomonas communis (Baumann et al. 1972) van Landschoot and De Ley 1984
. In 2007, Garrity et al. established Alteromonas communis as the basonym of
Oceanospirillum commune (Baumann et al. 1972) Bowditch et al. 1984
.
