Nomenclatural History

This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 6 in 1981. The species Alteromonas putrefaciens was originally described by Derby and Hammer 1931. It pre-dated the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names but was excluded from those lists. In 1977 the name was revived by Lee et al.. In 1986, List Editor established Alteromonas putrefaciens as the basonym of
Shewanella putrefaciens (Lee et al. 1981) MacDonell and Colwell 1986
