The species Halococcus turkmenicus was originally described by Zvyagintseva and Tarasov 1987. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 31 in 1989. In 1999, Ventosa et al. established Halococcus turkmenicus as the basonym of
Haloterrigena turkmenica (Zvyagintseva and Tarasov 1989) Ventosa et al. 1999
