The subspecies Aeromonas hydrophila proteolytica was originally described by Schubert 1969. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. Baumann et al. elevated this subspecies to the rank of species to form the name
Vibrio proteolyticus (Merkel et al. 1964) Baumann et al. 1982
in 1980.
