The species Aeromonas ichthiosmia was originally described by Schubert et al. 1990. This name became validly published when it appeared on Validation List No. 38 in 1991. Huys et al. established this name as a later heterotypic synonym of Hickman-Brenner et al. 1988 in 2001.
