The species Escherichia coli was originally described by Castellani and Chalmers 1919. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 26 in 1963. This name was affected by Judicial Opinion 15 in 1958.
Castellani and Chalmers 1919 cite Escherich 1886 for the original basonym, instead of Migula 1895, which appears on the Approved Lists.
